CONSTANTIN KOROVIN Featured Artist
Constantin Korovin (1861–1939) was a prominent Russian Impressionist painter known for his vibrant and expressive artworks. Arkhipov's Peasant Women On The Shore originates from his famous series "Traders" (Torgovki).
At the Union of Russian Artists exhibition in 1913, a similar painting was illustrated in the art journal Iskra. In a group photo from the time, where both Arkhipov and a group of artists are seated, the painting Traders hangs above them.
Abram Efros, in his review of the exhibition "Among Collectors," noted: "The unusually large scale of Arkhipov's skillful canvases. After all, he had never painted such a size before. Even the famous painting Guests is only 97 x 150 cm." Peasant Women On the Shore from the Traders series is Arkhipov's rarest masterpiece, a significant discovery for his legacy.
Abraham Efimovich Arkhipov was born to a peasant family in the remote village of Riazan Gubernia; his precocious talents were immediately recognized and encouraged at the local school. Despite financial difficulties in finding the necessary funds, his parents sent him to study at the School of Art, Sculpture, and Architecture in Moscow in 1871. Greatly influenced by his teacher Vasili Perov, Arkhipov was also inspired by Makovsky, Savrasov, and Polenov, artists who played an essential role in his schooling. An able and prodigious student, Arkhipov rapidly began to win prizes at exhibitions. In his third year, he completed A Game of 'Svaikia,' and in the early 1880s, The Second-Hand Shop (1882), The Drunkard (1883), and The Tavern (1883), all of which are now in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.
Few important works of this caliber remain in private collections, making Peasant Women On The Shore especially rare.
